There are three types of UV torches, called Long Wave (LW), Mid Wave (MW) and Short Wave (SW). Most minerals and gems fluoresce under LW only or SW only, with a few glowing in both or being better in MW. Unless you are a specialist user you probably don’t need Mid Wave.
To make LW minerals glow you need a LW torch, and to make SW minerals glow you need a SW torch. The wrong torch for a mineral won’t make it glow. There is a list of common minerals and gems here showing whether they need LW or SW.
