Mid Wave UV torches are for the serious collector. Very few minerals fluoresce only under Mid Wave, but some fluoresce more brightly or in a different colour under MW than they do under SW or MW. So most people start with Short and/or Long Wave, and get a Mid Wave torch/lamp later. Some examples: Some calcites, agrellite, some apatites and fluorapatites are brighter under Mid Wave. Willemite can fluoresce bright yellow under Mid Wave instead of the usual green under Short Wave.
