Three to four times as many minerals fluoresce under Short Wave UV as under Long Wave UV, fewer under Mid Wave UV. So Short Wave and Mid Wave UV torches are important for looking for, and looking at fluorescent minerals and gems. SW and MW LEDs are relatively new, and are more expensive and less bright than LW LEDs, but as further development takes place SW and MW torches will become cheaper and brighter. LED UV torches are more convenient than tube-based lamps which are larger and more cumbersome.
Our new FS12 SW UV torch is amazingly powerful, and is great for field use. For example, it is being used by mining companies looking for scheelite. A SW torch this powerful has been hoped for for many years … and now we have it!
